Born in Plantation, Florida, Onfroy had a turbulent upbringing marked by financial struggles and behavioral issues, turning to music as an outlet while spending time in a youth detention center where he met lifelong collaborator Ski Mask the Slump God. He skyrocketed to mainstream notoriety in 2017 with the distorted, aggressive SoundCloud hit "Look at Me!", followed by his deeply vulnerable, chart-topping albums 17 and ? which explored themes of depression, loneliness, and psychological pain through a mix of lo-fi hip-hop, emo rock, and acoustic indie music. His meteoric rise was heavily shadowed by severe domestic violence charges and legal battles, leaving a highly controversial legacy that was cut short when he was shot and killed at age 20 during an armed robbery outside a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida.
