What is krushclub? It is an internet microgenre that fuses jersey club rhythms with the bitcrushed, pitch-shifted production of sigilkore and hexD. It grew out of Luci4’s track “Kurxxed Emeraldz,” which went viral in summer 2021, took its name from the artist Lumi Athena, and became one of TikTok’s defining sounds in 2023. The name is often stylized as KRUSHCLUB!.

Krushclub is also one of the rare internet microgenres with real chart numbers behind it. Several of its songs reached the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and earned RIAA certifications. What is krushclub, exactly?

Krushclub is classed as a subgenre of sigilkore, and it is also listed as an offshoot of hexD, the bitcrushing mixing style both genres borrow from. The difference is rhythm. Sigilkore leans on trap drums and occult atmosphere, while krushclub swaps in the bouncing kick patterns of jersey club and turns the whole thing toward the dance floor.

The “krush” points to the bitcrushing effect at the center of the sound. The artist Lumi Athena coined the name to describe exactly that combination: jersey club plus bitcrushing.

Origins: Luci4, Jewelxxet and Lumi Athena

Krushclub starts with Luci4, the rapper and producer who pioneered sigilkore with Islurwhenitalk and their collective Jewelxxet in 2019. His song “Kurxxed Emeraldz” was one of the tracks that went viral on TikTok in summer 2021, and it is credited as the first krushclub record.

Lumi Athena, an artist born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and based in the United States, then gave the style its name and became its best-known artist. He has been active since 2022, gained major traction on TikTok and SoundCloud in 2023, and is signed to 25/7 Records.

The songs that made krushclub

Odetari, the Houston artist who calls his own style odecore, is the other big name tied to the sound. Six of his 2023 songs went gold, eleven of his tracks had charted on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs by the end of that year, and he signed a multi-album deal with Artist Partner Group in July 2023. His 2023 project 3×3 was made with the producer 9lives, one of the artists who brought sigilkore into the mainstream underground.

What krushclub sounds like

• Jersey club drums. Fast, bouncing kick patterns and chopped-up drum rhythms borrowed from jersey club.
• Bitcrushing and clipping. Heavy digital distortion across the mix, the same effect hexD built its identity on.
• Pitch-shifted, lo-bit vocals. Voices are pushed up and degraded until they resemble retro video game sounds.
• Short songs. Tracks often last two minutes or less, a length that suits 15 to 60 second TikTok clips.

The production guide site EDMProd describes the result as a blend of classic EDM, house and jersey club with a strong video-game energy. Lumi Athena’s “Icewhore!” shows how that works: it peaked at No. 29 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs after spreading as a meme on TikTok and Instagram. The short, immediate format is a big part of why the style travels on short-form video.

Krushclub did not stay one genre for long. Music journalist Kieran Press-Reynolds, writing for The Face, noted that “there’s krush-jerk and krush-cumbia, krush-funk and krush-phonk,” a sign that the krush treatment had turned into a technique producers apply to almost anything, much like hexD before it.
