Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Carter initially built a massive underground following on SoundCloud before exploding into the mainstream with his self-titled 2017 mixtape, which featured the viral breakout hits "Magnolia" and "wokeuplikethis*". He quickly established a reputation as a sonic chameleon, shifting from the breezy ad-lib-heavy style of his debut album Die Lit (2018) to the highly abrasive, vampire-inspired punk-rap energy of Whole Lotta Red (2020), and later adopting a gravelly, deep-voiced delivery on his blockbuster 2025 album, Music (also known as I Am Music). Beyond his elusive, highly mysterious public persona, he is a major force in the fashion world and the leader of his own influential creative collective and record label, Opium, which has shaped a massive, dedicated cult following among the new generation of music fans.
