D12, short for the Dirty Dozen, is a hip-hop group from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1996 by Proof, who recruited Bizarre, Bugz, Denaun Porter and Kuniva. Each member adopted an alter ego, giving six rappers twelve personas and the group its name. Eminem joined the core lineup after Bugz was shot and killed in 1999, and Swifty McVay came in at Bugz's request. Their debut album Devil's Night arrived in 2001 and D12 World followed in 2004, both certified double platinum, with the singles "Purple Pills," "Fight Music," "My Band" and "How Come." Both albums topped the charts in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, and the group won an MTV Europe Music Award in 2004. Proof was killed in Detroit in 2006, and the group has been intermittently active since.
