Raised in Rochester, New York, she joined the female trio Sugah in the early 1990s as part of DeVante Swing's Swing Mob collective, where she met Missy Elliott and formed a lasting partnership. She returned home to Panama City, Florida, around 1999 before Elliott brought her back, featuring her across Miss E… So Addictive. Her debut single "Oops (Oh My)," produced by Timbaland with Elliott on the hook, topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and reached number seven on the Hot 100 in 2002. Her debut album Southern Hummingbird debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and remains a touchstone for a generation of R&B singers. She followed it with It's Me Again and Charlene, and sang backing vocals across the Timbaland and Elliott catalog.
