The Roots are an American hip-hop band formed in Philadelphia in 1987 by rapper Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, who met at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts and busked on street corners with bucket drums. They cycled through names before settling on The Roots, released Organix independently in 1993 after a spell in London, and signed to DGC for Do You Want More?!!!??!, recorded without samples. Illadelph Halflife, Things Fall Apart and the Grammy-winning "You Got Me" followed, along with Phrenology, Game Theory and Undun. They are widely described as hip-hop's first legitimate band, playing live instruments throughout, and have served as the house band on Jimmy Fallon's late-night shows since 2009.
