Yvette Marie Stevens, born March 23, 1953, in Chicago, records as Chaka Khan. Known as the Queen of Funk, she first became famous in the early 1970s as the lead vocalist of Rufus, recording "Tell Me Something Good," "Sweet Thing," "Do You Love What You Feel" and "Ain't Nobody." Her solo debut produced the number one R&B hit "I'm Every Woman," later a pop hit for Whitney Houston. In 1984 her cover of Prince's "I Feel for You," with a Melle Mel verse, became the first crossover hit by an R&B artist to feature a rapper, and it remains a template for how rap and R&B share a record. She has won eleven Grammy Awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and her catalog is among the most sampled in hip-hop.
