Ermias Joseph Asghedom, born August 15, 1985, recorded as Nipsey Hussle. Raised in the Crenshaw District of South Central Los Angeles by an African-American mother and an Eritrean father, he left home at 14 and joined the Rollin' 60s Crips, then found his way into music through the Buttervision multimedia collective. He self-released Slauson Boy Volume 1 in 2005 and built a regional following through the Bullets Ain't Got No Name and Marathon mixtape series, then sold Crenshaw at $100 a copy in 2013, with Jay-Z buying 100. Victory Lap arrived in 2018, reached number two on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album. He was shot and killed outside his Marathon Clothing store on March 31, 2019, and won two Grammys posthumously the following year for "Racks in the Middle" and "Higher."
