Marie Dionne Warwick, born December 12, 1940, in East Orange, New Jersey, is a singer, actress and television host. She grew up singing gospel in her grandfather's AME church in Newark, studied at the Hartt College of Music, and met Burt Bacharach while singing session demos in New York. The partnership between Warwick, Bacharach and lyricist Hal David produced "Walk On By," "Don't Make Me Over," "Alfie," "I Say a Little Prayer" and dozens more, and made her one of the most charted vocalists of the rock era with 56 Hot 100 entries between 1962 and 1998. She has won six Grammys plus a Lifetime Achievement Award and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her catalog is a foundational sample source for hip-hop and R&B producers.
