The Playboi Carti vamp persona is the gothic, punk-influenced vampire character he built around his 2020 album Whole Lotta Red, and the word has since become shorthand for that entire era: the dark look, the chaotic rage production, the Opium label aesthetic, and the fans who now call themselves vamps.

The Playboi Carti vamp is a stage character and an aesthetic more than a lyrical theme. The persona draws on cult vampire films, including The Lost Boys (1987) and Interview with the Vampire (1994), and he blended it with punk. He has named the Sex Pistols as his favorite band and has treated Sid Vicious as a personal alter ego.

Put together, vamp means a mix of horror-movie theatrics, punk attitude and fashion: dark clothes, gothic imagery and a performance style built on raw energy. For fans, calling something vamp signals that it belongs to that world.

Where the vampire image started

The persona predates Whole Lotta Red. In The Fader’s June 2019 cover story, Carti told the magazine he was a vampire, more than a year before the album arrived. Through 2020, as the album’s rollout stretched on, the vampire imagery became his main visual language.

Georgia State University’s student newspaper, The Signal, dates the shift to 2020, describing it as a vampire aesthetic adopted for the Whole Lotta Red era.

Whole Lotta Red: the King Vamp album

Whole Lotta Red was released on December 25, 2020, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 100,000 album-equivalent units, Carti’s first chart-topping debut. It is the record that turned the vamp persona into a fully formed world.

• “Vamp Anthem” samples Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, the organ piece most associated with horror films.
• “King Vamp” presents Carti as ruler of the undead, the clearest statement of the persona.
• The cover, designed by Art Dealer, pays homage to the first issue of the 1970s punk fanzine Slash, which featured David Vanian of The Damned.

Critics singled out the album’s dark, vampire-themed tone, and Rolling Stone praised the way Carti expressed emotion in an elusive, theatrical manner. The production, full of distorted synths and relentless energy, also became a blueprint for rage music. Why Carti fans call themselves vamps

After Whole Lotta Red, fans adopted the word for themselves. Carti’s fanbase, which he has described as a cult, started calling itself vamps and using the vampire emoji as a signal in comment sections and on the r/playboicarti community.

The live shows reinforced it. His 2021 performances leaned on red strobe lights, lasers and inverted-cross imagery, turning the album’s aesthetic into something fans could experience in a room. In that world, vamp works as an identity as much as a description.

Vamp, Opium and the look

Vamp and Opium overlap but are not the same thing. Opium is the record label Carti founded in 2019, home to Ken Carson from 2019 and Destroy Lonely from 2021, and its dark sound and visual identity draw on the Atlanta rage scene and 1970s and 1980s punk. Opium has also become a name for the streetwear style that grew around it.

The word has spread into the underground as well. The producer Islurwhenitalk named his heavy jerk substyle vampjerk on his 2022 releases, and that sound later fed into jugg edit rap. Carti moved on to new eras after Whole Lotta Red, but vamp is still how much of his audience refers to itself and to the album that started it.
